Craig Spearman
It’s with pleasure that I write a few words in support of Craig Spearman who has been credited with a substantial honour by the Gloucestershire County Cricket Club by granting him a Benefit for the 2007-2008 cricket season
I first had contact with Craig when he was a student at Kelston Boys High School in West Auckland and I was the school Principal. Surprising as may seem to some; Craig was very successful as a secondary school student. He did well academically; was a member of the First XI cricket team for five years 1986 -90 and captain the side to the Auckland Secondary School Championship in 1989, a year the he scored three centuries.
Craig was also selected as Head Prefect in 1990 after being a Prefect in 1989.
Obviously an outstanding set of achievements. But he did frustrate me; hugely talented with an amazing range of shots; but too often he would get out early caught behind the wicket going for one those magnificent cover drives. But that was Craig’s philosophy; dominate; and that’s why he has been such successful cricketer; and gives many cricket lovers pleasure both in New Zealand and in Gloucester.
Craig always had a great love for the game. I remember the time he when he was young guy at Kelston being hauled into my office when he was late for school. Because he stayed up all night watching Trevor Franklin, another West Auckland boy, playing for New Zealand score a century at Lords against England.
I would imagine Craig would be the first to admit that he did not do his immense talents justice in New Zealand but since his move to Gloucestershire he has gone from strength to strength and is now one of the most successful batsmen in county cricket.
I would like join all those in cricket including his old team mates from Kelston and there coach Steve Cole and wish Craig every success in his Benefit season. I hope both Craig and Gloucester have a very successful season and both on and off the pitch.
