Wooden Spoon was founded 24 years ago after England ‘won’ the Wooden Spoon in the 1983 Five Nations. Spoon is the charity of British and Irish rugby and its work helps physically, socially and mentally disadvantaged children and young people all over the UK and Ireland.

To date Spoon has distributed over £13 million to national and local projects organized over 2000 fundraising events and has over 10,000 members. Funds raised have enhanced the lives of more than 500,000 children and young people. 250 projects have been completed across the UK ranging from playgrounds and wheelchair facilities to refuge centres and hospital baby units.

Spoon now raises over £1.5m a year. This has allowed the charity to substantially increase the number of projects it supports. At present Spoon has ongoing, identified projects exceeding £3.4 million in value across more than 64 different projects.

HRH The Princess Royal is Spoon’s Royal Patron and the four Rugby Home Unions are additional patrons. Other active supporters include Richard Hill, Kyran Bracken, Lawrence Dallaglio, Willie John McBride, Gavin Hastings and Jason Leonard. There are over 43 active regional committees run by volunteers working to raise funds locally for local projects.

Spoon’s guiding principle has been “to have fun while fundraising.” This principle has seen the charity achieve tremendous success in a short period of time. Today, Wooden Spoon can count itself among the top national charities in the UK.
